The GB power market for renewables
Great Britain runs its own market outside the EU coupling, with sterling pricing, half-hourly settlement and a system operator, NESO, that procures an unusually wide range of balancing services. Offshore wind dominates new capacity, while grid-scale batteries have made GB the most liquid flexibility market in Europe.
Because wind output often outstrips transmission capacity from Scotland, the Balancing Mechanism and curtailment payments are a structural part of generator economics.
CfD, ROCs and Balancing and Settlement Code responsibilities
New large projects are mostly supported through Contracts for Difference awarded in allocation rounds and settled by the LCCC against a market reference price, so the electricity itself still has to be traded. Older plants hold Renewables Obligation Certificates, and a growing share of solar and batteries operates fully merchant or under corporate PPAs.
Every unit must be covered by a BSC Party that accepts imbalance exposure under Elexon's rules; aggregators can register smaller assets as Virtual Lead Parties to reach the Balancing Mechanism.
N2EX, EPEX and NESO balancing services
Day-ahead volume clears in the N2EX and EPEX SPOT auctions, with continuous intraday trading until shortly before delivery. Imbalances are settled every half hour at a single cash-out price that spikes in tight evening periods.
NESO buys frequency response through Dynamic Containment, Dynamic Moderation and Dynamic Regulation, plus reserve services and Balancing Mechanism bids and offers, which together form the revenue stack for GB batteries.
What SAMAWATT offers in the United Kingdom
SAMAWATT trades GB solar, wind and battery assets on N2EX and EPEX, manages half-hourly imbalance exposure and optimises batteries across Dynamic Containment, reserve and the Balancing Mechanism from the same forecasting engine used on the continent.
For asset owners comparing a fixed PPA with merchant trading, the calculator on this site gives a GB-specific revenue estimate.
