The Dutch power market for renewables
The Netherlands combines very high rooftop and utility solar density, large offshore wind and a grid so congested that new connections often come with non-firm capacity. Negative prices at midday are frequent, and the imbalance market is among the most volatile in Europe.
TenneT publishes imbalance prices every minute, which lets flexible assets react in real time, a practice known as passive balancing.
SDE++, programme responsibility and congestion management
SDE++ pays a premium that tops up market revenue to a base amount, corrected for the realised market price, so the electricity itself is sold on the market and the correction amount makes forecast quality and negative-price hours matter.
Every connection is assigned to a programme-responsible party that submits schedules to TenneT and carries imbalance costs every 15 minutes. Congestion management through GOPACS and non-firm connection agreements add revenue for batteries that can relieve local grid constraints.
EPEX SPOT, ETPA and the TenneT imbalance market
Day-ahead trading runs on EPEX SPOT Netherlands; intraday liquidity is split between EPEX and ETPA, a Dutch venue with 15-minute products that SAMAWATT is certified on. Imbalances settle on a single price that rewards being short or long in the system's direction.
Batteries stack spot arbitrage with FCR and aFRR from TenneT and passive-balancing revenue, which has made the Netherlands one of the strongest BESS markets in Europe.
What SAMAWATT offers in the Netherlands
SAMAWATT trades Dutch solar, wind and batteries on EPEX SPOT and ETPA, covers programme responsibility and runs passive balancing and congestion services from the same optimisation engine.
SDE++ holders keep their premium while SAMAWATT improves the market leg and avoids negative-price production.
