Solar PPA alternative: why merchant solar needs active trading
A fixed PPA swaps the midday price risk for a flat price that is usually set well below the achievable market value. As solar capacity grows, the gap widens: the hours when your park produces most are the hours when prices are lowest, and in Germany, the Netherlands and Spain they are increasingly negative. A solar route to market with active trading keeps the upside and removes the negative-price exposure, while a subsidy or an existing PPA can stay in place.
SAMAWATT acts as your direct marketer and, where we are registered, as your Balance Responsible Party. You keep ownership of the asset and the support scheme; we take over forecasting, nomination, trading, balancing and settlement, and report every decision at asset level.
How negative price avoidance works for solar parks
Negative price avoidance is a forecast problem before it is a trading problem. Our models combine satellite irradiance, cloud-cover nowcasts and plant telemetry to forecast each park's output with a 2.3% mean absolute error, recalibrated every 15 minutes. The price model runs in parallel on the same horizon.
- 1Forecast output and pricePanel-level production forecast and bidding-zone price forecast for the next 36 hours, updated every 15 minutes.
- 2Trim day-ahead nominationsWhere the price forecast turns negative, the day-ahead bid is curtailed and the plant controller receives the schedule automatically.
- 3Re-trade intradayWhen prices recover or cloud shadows change output, the auto-trader re-trades on the continuous intraday market within minutes.
- 4Settle and reportImbalance is netted inside the portfolio; the settlement statement shows revenue, avoided negative hours and fees per asset.
Solar capture price, imbalance costs and the revenue uplift
Two levers move solar revenue: the capture price (the average price you actually receive per MWh) and the imbalance cost (the penalty for deviating from your nomination). Passive day-ahead selling locks you into the lowest-price hours and a 4–5% forecast error. Active trading raises the capture price by selling less at noon and more in the shoulder hours, and intraday re-trading cuts the imbalance bill in half.
For a 100 MW park in Germany the combined effect is roughly €855,000 per year above a passive route to market, net of fees. The revenue simulation below lets you size this for your own capacity and market.
SAMAWATT solar direct marketing services
SAMAWATT runs solar portfolios from 10 MW to multi-hundred-MW across 18 European markets, with registered balancing responsibility in Germany and Switzerland and partner BRPs elsewhere. Direct marketing, Redispatch 2.0 compliance, PPA shaping and subsidy accounting are handled by the same platform that does the trading, so there is no hand-off between a forecaster, a trader and a settlement team. Our optimization engine is auditable down to each 15-minute bid.
