The Polish power market for renewables
Poland has added solar faster than almost any other European market this decade, on top of a coal-heavy system that sets high and volatile prices. Midday solar now pushes prices negative on sunny weekends while evening peaks stay expensive, a spread that rewards batteries and active trading.
The 2024 balancing-market reform moved Poland to 15-minute settlement and marginal pricing, aligning it with the EU target model and making forecast quality a direct cost driver for asset owners.
CfD auctions, green certificates and balancing responsibility
Since 2016 new capacity has been supported through auctions run by the regulator URE that award a two-sided contract for difference: the plant sells on the market and settles the gap to its strike price. Older plants still hold green certificates, and corporate PPAs are common for new solar and wind.
Every MWh must be covered by a POB that settles imbalances with PSE. The 2023 cable-pooling rules let solar, wind and storage share one grid connection, which opens hybrid projects to market-based optimisation.
TGE day-ahead and intraday trading in Poland
TGE runs the day-ahead market, coupled with the EU single day-ahead coupling, and an intraday market coupled through SIDC. Liquidity has grown with the renewable fleet, and the price spread between day-ahead and the PSE balancing market is wide enough to reward intraday re-trading.
Batteries can access PSE's balancing services, with FCR and aFRR procurement expanding as the system adds flexibility needs.
What SAMAWATT offers in Poland
SAMAWATT trades Polish solar, wind and battery assets on TGE, provides balancing responsibility, and optimises hybrid cable-pooling sites across day-ahead, intraday and balancing revenues.
CfD holders keep their strike-price certainty while SAMAWATT captures the upside of accurate forecasting and negative-price avoidance.
