The Hungarian power market for renewables
Hungary has added gigawatts of solar in a few years, turning HUPX from a regional hub into a market with a pronounced midday price dip and growing curtailment. The country is a net importer, so prices follow the Austrian, Slovak and Romanian borders through the Core and 4M coupling.
Negative prices now appear on sunny spring days, which makes forecasting and curtailment control a direct revenue factor.
METÁR premium, balance groups and MAVIR rules
The METÁR scheme, introduced in 2017, supports larger plants with a premium awarded by tender and settled against the HUPX day-ahead price. Many recent utility-scale solar projects are merchant or PPA-backed instead.
All output must sit in a balance group whose responsible party settles imbalances with MAVIR every 15 minutes. MAVIR procures FCR, aFRR and mFRR, and batteries are entering these markets.
HUPX day-ahead and intraday trading in Hungary
HUPX operates the coupled day-ahead market and intraday trading through SIDC. Liquidity is strong relative to the system size, and the spread to neighbouring zones gives room for cross-border positioning.
Imbalance prices in HUF can be volatile, so active intraday re-trading is the main defence against forecast errors.
