The Belgian power market for renewables
Belgium is a compact, highly interconnected market whose prices track France, the Netherlands and Germany through the Core coupling. Offshore wind and rooftop solar dominate renewable output, and the planned nuclear phase-out and life extensions shape the price outlook.
Elia's single imbalance price, published close to real time, has made Belgium a reference market for battery flexibility and imbalance optimisation.
Green certificates, the CRM and balancing responsibility
Support is regional: Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels each issue green certificates that producers sell to suppliers, while offshore wind uses federal contracts for difference. The federal capacity remuneration mechanism contracts capacity through yearly auctions and has brought new batteries into the market.
Every access point is assigned to a BRP contracted with Elia, which carries the imbalance costs. Elia procures FCR, aFRR and mFRR in daily auctions open to aggregated batteries.
EPEX SPOT Belgium and Elia balancing services
Day-ahead and intraday trading run on EPEX SPOT Belgium within the European coupling. Imbalances are settled every 15 minutes at a single price that rewards portfolios positioned in the direction of system need, which is why passive balancing is a real revenue stream for flexible assets.
Batteries combine spot arbitrage with FCR and aFRR, both procured by Elia with daily and four-hour blocks.
