The Swedish power market for renewables
Sweden's hydro and nuclear north-south structure produces persistent spreads between the cheap northern zones SE1 and SE2 and the populous south, SE3 and SE4, which follow continental prices. Onshore wind is the main growth technology, and batteries have grown rapidly on the back of lucrative frequency-reserve markets.
Reserve prices have normalised as battery capacity grew, so stacking reserve revenue with spot and intraday trading now matters.
Merchant market, balance responsibility and Svenska kraftnät reserves
The electricity certificate scheme no longer accepts new plants, so new wind and solar are merchant or PPA-backed. Every producer needs a balansansvarig that settles imbalances every 15 minutes through eSett, the shared Nordic settlement company.
Svenska kraftnät procures FCR-N, FCR-D up and down, aFRR and mFRR, with daily and intraday auctions that batteries can enter directly or through aggregators.
Nord Pool day-ahead, intraday and zone arbitrage in Sweden
Nord Pool runs the Nordic day-ahead and intraday markets within the European coupling with 15-minute resolution. Zone spreads, interconnector flows to Denmark, Germany, Poland and the Baltics, and wind forecast errors drive most trading value.
Imbalance costs for wind portfolios are a major revenue lever, so forecasting and intraday correction are central to the service.
