In short

How does Nord Pool trading in Denmark work for wind and solar?

Danish producers sell on the Nord Pool day-ahead and intraday markets at the DK1 or DK2 zone price and settle imbalances every 15 minutes through a balanceansvarlig with Energinet and eSett. SAMAWATT, ISV-certified on Nord Pool, provides forecasting, DK1/DK2 trading, balance responsibility and reserve-market participation for wind, solar and batteries.

The Danish power market for renewables

Denmark has the highest wind share in Europe and a fast-growing solar fleet, split across two zones: DK1 in Jutland and Funen is part of the continental synchronous area and tracks German prices, while DK2 on Zealand is part of the Nordic area and tracks Sweden.

That split means the two zones buy different reserve products and often price very differently, which rewards a trader active in both.

Tenders, merchant revenue and balance responsibility

Support has moved from feed-in premiums to technology-neutral tenders and offshore contracts for difference, and most onshore wind and solar today is merchant or PPA-backed. Every producer needs a balanceansvarlig that settles imbalances through eSett every 15 minutes.

Energinet procures FCR for DK1 jointly with the continental market and FCR-N and FCR-D for DK2 with the Nordic TSOs, plus aFRR and mFRR in both zones.

Nord Pool day-ahead, intraday and DK1/DK2 optimisation

Nord Pool runs the day-ahead and intraday markets for both zones within the European coupling. Interconnectors to Germany, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK make Denmark a transit market whose prices react strongly to wind forecasts across the North Sea.

Negative prices are common on windy nights and sunny weekends, so curtailment control and intraday re-trading decide captured prices.
