In short

How does Nord Pool trading in Norway work for renewable energy?

Norwegian producers sell on the Nord Pool day-ahead and intraday markets at the price of their bidding zone (NO1 to NO5) and settle imbalances with Statnett every 15 minutes through a balanseansvarlig. SAMAWATT, ISV-certified on Nord Pool, provides forecasting, multi-zone trading, balance responsibility and reserve-market participation for hydro, wind and batteries.

The Norwegian power market for renewables

Norway is almost entirely hydro, with growing onshore wind and an offshore pipeline. Its five bidding zones price very differently: the south (NO1, NO2, NO5) follows continental and British prices through interconnectors, while the north (NO3, NO4) often trades far below.

That zonal structure, plus reservoir dynamics, makes Norway a market where multi-zone optimisation matters more than in any single-zone market.

Merchant market, balance responsibility and Statnett reserves

The joint Norwegian-Swedish electricity certificate scheme closed to new plants in 2021, so new wind and hydro are merchant or PPA-backed. Every producer must have a balanseansvarlig that settles imbalances through the Nordic settlement company eSett.

Statnett procures FCR-N, FCR-D, aFRR and mFRR, with mFRR the dominant product in a hydro-flexible system.

Nord Pool day-ahead, intraday and multi-zone optimisation

Nord Pool runs the Nordic day-ahead auction and intraday market within the European coupling, with 15-minute resolution since the Nordic transition. Zone spreads and interconnector flows to Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and Denmark drive most of the trading value.

Hydro producers optimise reservoir value against forward and spot prices, while wind and batteries capture intraday and reserve revenue.
