In short

How does route to market in Greece work for solar and wind?

Greek renewable plants sell on the HEnEx day-ahead and intraday markets and settle imbalances with IPTO (ADMIE) through a FoSE aggregator that acts as balancing responsible entity. Plants with a feed-in premium from a RAAEY auction receive the difference to their reference price. SAMAWATT provides forecasting, HEnEx trading, balancing responsibility and curtailment management.

The Greek power market for renewables

Greece has one of the highest solar shares in Europe and is coupled with Italy and Bulgaria through the single day-ahead and intraday coupling since its target-model go-live in 2020. Midday curtailment of solar is already routine, and prices swing from zero at noon to gas-driven peaks in the evening.

Grid constraints and the growing storage pipeline make active trading and curtailment management essential for revenue.

Feed-in premium auctions, FoSE aggregators and IPTO balancing rules

New projects win a feed-in premium in competitive auctions run by the regulator RAAEY and settled by DAPEEP against the market price. Producers participate in the market through a FoSE, the licensed aggregator that also carries balancing responsibility with IPTO.

The balancing market procures FCR, aFRR and mFRR and settles imbalances at marginal prices that penalise forecast errors on both sides.

HEnEx day-ahead and intraday trading in Greece

HEnEx runs the day-ahead market and intraday auctions coupled with the EU, plus continuous intraday trading. Liquidity has grown with cross-border coupling and the renewable fleet.

Storage projects awarded under the Greek storage tenders will add balancing-market depth over the coming years.
